Translation Portal
GDF Hannover provides for years documentations and tutorials to the
free geographical information system GRASS GIS. This literature is published under the GNU FDL
(GNU Free Document License) and thus it is available to the user community free of charge in electronic
formats.
In October 2005 GDF Hannover decided to establish an open Translation Portal for the GRASS 6 Tutorial in
consideration to the rising demand for translations of the literature originally provided in German.
The portal offers a possibility to the world-wide GIS community to translate the documentation into different
languages as an important contribution for the future use and acceptance of GRASS GIS.
In this context we would like to thank all translators for their support!
How does the Translation Portal work?
The translation portal is based on "subversion", a version control system, which supports
maintenance of the text sources during the translation process. Generally, the portal is
divided into two areas:
Translation Area (branches)
The area "Translation" includes defined versions (tags) of the documentations. Here only translational
work is done. An english version of the document is provided, which can be then translated
by all registered translators step by step into the various languages. Necessary is only the
installation of the program "svn" (subversion package).
For the exact procedure please contact
GDF Hannover.

New Contents Area (trunk)
Within the area "New Contents" the development of new contents and bugfixing of the documentations will be done on basis of the
current English version. In this area all registered people may discuss in the mailing list the transfer of new contents into
further documentation versions. These results will then be translated within the "Translation Area". This part is coordinated by GDF Hannover.
